First night in prison
What reception, first-night phone calls, and induction usually look like — without the folklore.
prisoncheck
Arrival is reception, not a wing. Property is taken, identity is confirmed, health and risk questions are asked. This can run late into the evening.
Most prisons try to let someone make a short first-night call. It can be after 9pm. It can be two minutes. It is not a conversation about the case.
They should be seen by staff about how they are feeling. Extra checks overnight are standard, not a sign that something is uniquely wrong.
Induction — rules, phone lists, visits, canteen, work — usually takes the first week. Useful questions start after that, not before.
