What this actually means

Visit cost is usually travel plus time off work, not the visit itself. The Assisted Prison Visits Scheme exists because this is a known barrier.

Remote prisons are a different product from city locals. Check trains and taxis before you promise a Saturday.

If you qualify for help, claim it. It is not a favour.

Getting there, and help with costs

• Every prison page on GOV.UK has local directions, parking notes and public-transport pointers.
• If you receive certain benefits or hold an NHS tax-credit exemption certificate, you may get help through the Assisted Prison Visits Scheme.
• Claims usually cover travel, and sometimes overnight stay and meals.
